ロボットの定義はミクロの世界まで広がっている！
ロボットの定義はさまざまであるが、ここでは、「センサー等により外部環境から情報を得て、その得られた情報を処理・判断し、その結果に応じて、駆動システムを通して、環境に対して働きかけるもの」と定義することができる。
これまで、ロボットというと、初期に普及した産業用ロボットが頭に浮かぶことが多い。ただ、これからのロボットは、IoT におけるインターフェイスデバイスとして、人と親和性が高く、さらにAI が加わって、その活躍できる領域は劇的に広がっていくとみられている。こうして新たに登場してきたコミュニケーションロボットは、産業用ロボットとは異なる点がある。
産業用ロボットは、基本的にモノや機械が相手なので、決められた作業を、的確かつスピーディーに行なうことが求められ、それ以外の機能はあまり要求されないことが多い。
しかし、コミュニケーションの場合は、相手が人間なので単に機能をこなすだけではなく、まずは、人に対して危害を加えることがないように、その素材や動作もおのずから異なってくる。対象も、工業製品のように規格化されていない千差万別のものが対象となるので、つかむという動作一つとっても、容易ではない。
そこに求められることは、的確であると同時に、繊細さやしなやかさということになる。そして、そのことはロボットを駆動するシステムにも影響することとなる。
さらに、ロボットの応用範囲は拡大の一途をたどっている。それに伴って、微小化傾向もとどまるところを知らず、マイクロロボットなどが登場してきている。さらに最近では、分子サイズの分子ロボットもロボットの定義に当てはまる。そこでは、まったく異質な駆動システムが機能している。
